1. Introduction for China Agriculture

After 50 years of hard exploration and 20 years¡¯ open-up, China¡¯s agriculture has entered into a new developing phase. It has greatly improved its agricultural comprehensive productivity and agricultural supply has changed from the status of long-term shortage to overall balance. According to the statistic in 2001, the output of much agro-products has been in the head of the world agricultural industry, the annual average grain output accounts for 400 kg/capita; amount of meat product is 50 kg/capita; and the everyday intake of protein and fat per capita account for 70g and 52g. And the energy supplied to each person per day amounted to 2750 kcal.

China has widely broadened agricultural exchange and cooperation with the world. It has established long-time and steady-going relationship with over 140 countries and international organizations. As a result, the utilization of foreign funds in agriculture has increased a lot. By the year 2000, the number of agro-projects invested by foreign funds reached 11,000, and the amount of committed foreign investment summed up to US$ 20 billion. In the process of foreign exchange and cooperation, China has also imported more than 100,000 animal and plant species and several tens technologies, each of which has an economic outcome of over RMB 1 billion. And the total agricultural trade value amounted to US$ 26.8 billion in 2000.

After China joined WTO, China¡¯s agriculture would enjoy more free space in foreign trade cooperation. The Go-West strategy will further improve the open-up environment for agriculture in West China, and will bring in there more opportunities for agricultural development, especially in the fields of infrastructure construction, agro-ecological environment protection, and characteristic agricultural development.
